Census 2011 recorded 133,464 residents within Chhatarpur municipality and 142,128 in the municipality with its outgrowth. The city supports a broad mix of clothing, grocery, electronics, medical, hardware, food, hotel, education and professional-service businesses. Chhatarpur also provides access to important district attractions including Khajuraho, Dhubela, Raneh Falls, Jatashankar and Bhimkund.
03History
Chhatarpur takes its name from Maharaja Chhatrasal, the Bundela ruler closely associated with the region. The city developed as the capital of the former princely state of Chhatarpur and later became the administrative headquarters of the district. The wider district preserves major Bundelkhand heritage, including the Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum at Dhubela and the UNESCO-listed Khajuraho Group of Monuments.
